When can I register?
Registration opens in the summer, and closes in October or when full. Spring league registration opens in February.
What programs do you offer?
We offer a "Junior Lakers" program for kids aged 5-7. This consists of one session per week with a focus on skills. We also have boys and girls teams from U10-U18 participating in the Metro Basketball Association. Two practices and one game per week. Spring Leagues are offered based on interest, and run between April-June.
Does experience level matter?
No! We hold balancing sessions to ensure players of similar skills end up on the same team.
How long is the season?
Balancing sessions start late September. The Metro Basketball league runs from late October - February. Provincials are held in March & April. Junior Lakers has a fall session and a winter session of 8 weeks each.
When are my practices?
Practice times are not determined until after teams are made and coaches are assigned. Teams will practice at set times twice per week at schools around Dartmouth. U10-U12 usually practice between 6-8pm. U14-U18 usually practice between 8-10pm. It all depends on how many teams we have in each age group, and coach availablilty. It is common for children to play multiple sports, with two practices per week, missing one occasionally is acceptable provided communication is made with the coach.
When are my games?
U10-U12 play on Saturdays, and U14-U18 play on Sundays between 9am-5pm. Games are 70-90 minutes and are played all over HRM.
What is the cost? (as of 2026/27 season, subject to change)
Junior Lakers costs $200 for both fall and winter, or $125 for one or the other. This includes 8 skills sessions, a t-shirt, and a basketball. U10-U18 league play costs $475 plus $200 for the uniform if needed. Please reach out if costs are an issue! KidsSport provides funding if you qualify.
Do I need to buy a uniform?
Every player in U10-U18 is required to have a Lakers uniform (jersey and shorts). This is a one time cost, and can be exchanged at any time for a different size. We also offer a buy-back option for those that are finished playing basketball. If you would like to donate your uniform instead to a player in need, that is an option as well.
Can I watch my child's practice?
The majority of our practices are closed to parents, especially in the older age groups. However, coaches can use their discretion.
What should my child bring to practices and games?
A water bottle. Jersey to games, t-shirt to practices (unless the coach wants them to wear their jerseys). Athletic shorts. Sneakers that are dedicated for inside use only. No outside footwear should be worn on the court. No jewelry, fake nails, or headbands that tie or hang down.
Will my child get equal playing time?
In U10 & U12, all players must play the same amount of shifts (or within 1). In U14 Div 3 and below, the first 3 quarters are broken up into 6 shifts that must be played equally amoungst all players. The last quarter is a full 8 minutes and coaches can play whoever they want for however long they want. In U14 Div 1&2, U16, and U18, the game consists of 4 full 10 minute quarters. Coaches can sub players in and out as necessary. We encourage coaches to utilize "fair" play, which doesn't always mean equal play. No kid should ever sit on the bench for an entire game.
